Key learning outcomes

  • Judge honestly whether you are ready to tour, and whether you are ready to tour abroad, before spending money on either.
  • Research a market and a room properly enough to know whether you fit before you ask anyone for anything.
  • Get the show, the paperwork and the technical requirements into a state a promoter can work with.
  • Approach venues and promoters in a way that gives them a reason to say yes, and read the offer you get back.

Workshop Description

Live performance is where most working artists earn most of their income. This workshop is how a show gets booked, routed, advanced, played and settled, and how a regional run becomes a national one and then an international one.

It is built on the Hub and Spokes method, then Slow Touring, because that is the sequence that builds a real audience without spending money you do not have on markets that do not know you yet. Touring at home and touring abroad are taught as one arc rather than two separate subjects, because the decisions that make an export run work start long before the first international date.

Who this is for. Artists playing live now or about to start, and the managers around them. No agent required. This workshop assumes you are booking yourself.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Judge honestly whether you are ready to tour, and whether you are ready to tour abroad, before spending money on either.
  • Research a market and a room properly enough to know whether you fit before you ask anyone for anything.
  • Get the show, the paperwork and the technical requirements into a state a promoter can work with.
  • Approach venues and promoters in a way that gives them a reason to say yes, and read the offer you get back.
  • Grow an audience in a market you do not live in, and handle the legal and administrative requirements of performing there.
  • Promote a show so the room fills, using the channels that actually move people in that market.
  • Route a run that pays for itself and advance every show so nothing is decided on the day.
  • Target the showcase festivals worth applying to, and earn from a show beyond the fee.
  • Market a tour as one campaign, and build the sponsorship offer that widens what it earns.
  • Run a tour that does not cost you more than it earns, in money or in people, and manage the partners around it.
  • Know when an agent is worth their commission, how to attract one, and how to open the next territory.
  • Produce one complete, costed tour and expansion plan you can actually execute.
