A logo is the smallest part of a brand. It is the part people can see, so it gets all the attention, and it decides almost nothing.
A brand is a set of decisions you have already made, written down, so that you do not have to make them again every time something comes up. That is the whole job. If your brand does not decide anything, it is decoration.
Decoration or infrastructure
The difference shows up in how often you have to think. An artist with a brand answers most day to day questions quickly, because the answer was settled once and written down. An artist with only a logo relitigates the same questions every week and gets a slightly different answer each time.
That is the cost, and it is invisible until you add it up. It is not that the wrong choice gets made. It is that a choice has to be made at all, over and over, by someone who should be writing.
The test
Take something you are deciding this week. A cover image, a caption, a show offer, an outfit for a shoot. Ask whether your brand answers it.
If you have to work it out from scratch, your brand is not doing its job yet. If the answer is obvious the moment you look at what you wrote down, it is.
Most artists have a strong idea of themselves and a weak record of it. The idea lives in their head, so every surface ends up slightly different, and a listener who finds you in four places comes away with four impressions.
Consistency is the point
Consistency is not repetition. You are not posting the same image everywhere. You are making sure the person who finds you in four places comes away with one impression instead of four.
That is what writing it down buys you. Not a better logo. Fewer decisions, made once, and held to.
Create My Brand Like a Pro builds this as a system you can hand to anyone working with you. See the workshop.
