Lesson 2: Know Who Your Brand Is For

Define your primary audience using market research, demographics, psychographics, behaviors, emotional drivers, and audience perceptions instead of relying on assumptions.

Outcome. Define your primary audience from evidence rather than from what you assume about them.

Most artists describe their audience as everyone who likes good music. That is not an audience, it is a hope, and it cannot be marketed to. A real definition is specific enough that you could pick a venue, a playlist, a collaborator and an ad set from it without guessing.

Build it from what you can actually observe. Demographics tell you who, and your own platform analytics already hold that. Psychographics tell you what they value and what they believe. Behavior tells you what they do: where they discover music, what makes them share, whether they buy.

Then go past the data to the emotional driver. People do not follow an artist for a genre, they follow for what the music lets them feel or say about themselves. Name that, and the rest of the brand has something to serve.

What you will produce

An audience profile covering demographics, psychographics, behaviors, the emotional driver, and how that audience currently perceives you.
