Lesson 7: SoundExchange and the Recording Side

Outcome. Collect the digital performance royalties owed on the sound recording, which no PRO and no publisher collects for you.

Everything so far in this workshop has been the musical work. The sound recording earns separately, and the money owed to featured artists and to rights owners for non interactive digital performance is collected in the United States by SoundExchange.

This is the stream most independent artists miss entirely, because it is not paid by the PRO, not paid by the MLC, and not paid by the distributor. It has to be claimed.

A featured artist signed to a label may need a label waiver to be paid directly. Knowing that this document exists is often the difference between being paid and waiting.

SoundExchange is also one of the agencies that can issue you an ISNI, which matters for the identifiers module.

What you will produce

A SoundExchange registration for both your artist side and your rights owner side, whichever apply to you.
