Lesson 6: Finding and Creating Licensing Opportunities

Learn how to identify licensing opportunities, research potential buyers and partners, prepare music for pitching, and position your catalog for placement and licensing.

Outcome. Get a catalog pitch ready and put it in front of the right people with a pitch they can act on.

Music supervisors on film and television, agency creatives on advertising, production companies, streaming platforms and game developers are not one audience and do not want the same things. A supervisor is solving a scene and needs a track they can clear before a deadline, which is why clearable often beats better.

Catalog readiness is the gate. Correct metadata, instrumentals and where possible stems, honest tagging for mood, tempo, genre and theme, and certainty about whether every element in the recording is yours or licensed for this use.

One stop is the advantage an independent has. If a single party can grant both licences, that is worth real money to a buyer working to a deadline, because every extra rights holder is another chance the clearance fails.

The pitch leads with the fit rather than the biography: what scene, what feeling, what tempo, the clearance position in one line, and one working link that needs no login. Then it stops.

What you will produce

A pitch ready catalog sheet, a target list of named supervisors and agencies, and three completed pitches sent.
