Lesson 2: Researching Markets and Preparing for Opportunity

Research local and international music scenes while developing the professional preparation necessary to pursue the right performance opportunities.

Outcome. Research a market and a room properly enough to know whether you fit before you ask anyone for anything.

Research the scene before you choose the market. Streaming and social data show you where listeners already are, and the cheapest export market is usually the one that already found you rather than the one you find glamorous.

At room level the tool is a venue profile: name, club type and capacity, location, hours, year founded, ownership entity, the building itself, hospitality, amenities, technology, the genres it books, its target demographic, staffing during opening hours, accessibility, sound gear and lighting gear.

That detail is not bureaucracy. A 110 capacity acoustic room with a basic twenty channel board and five ceiling lights is a completely different night from a 500 capacity room with a production rider, and you should know which one you are walking into before you agree a fee.

Genre fit and target demographic matter more than capacity. A half full room of the right people beats a full room waiting for the next act. Accessibility belongs in the profile too, because that is information your audience needs from you rather than a discovery they make at the door.

What you will produce

A market research sheet per target market and completed venue profiles for every room you intend to approach.
