Lesson 2: Developing Your Artist Brand and Release Foundation

Define the artist’s brand, target audience, messaging, visual identity, and the essential elements needed before launching a release.

Outcome. Have the brand, the audience and the assets settled before a release date is chosen.

A release inherits whatever the brand already is. If the position is vague, the release is vague, and no amount of promotion later fixes that.

The target audience is written in specifics rather than in brackets: age, location, occupation, income, the platforms they actually use, the artists they already love, and what they are not getting from music right now.

Messaging is the handful of sentences that survive being repeated. What you are, who it is for, and why this record exists. If you cannot say it in one line, a journalist will not either.

The visual identity and the asset list come next: artwork, photographs, video, the lyric and credit information, and the biography in long and short form. The point of settling these first is that a rollout cannot be built around assets that do not exist yet.

What you will produce

A one page release foundation: position, audience, messaging, visual direction, and a complete asset checklist with owners and dates.
